Yes, he's won a World Cup. Yes, he has collected quite a few trophies at Barcelona, but I don't think many could argue he was a key contributor. Although he started his Spanish senior club career brightly, he's only scored 9 goals in 48 appearances for his club in 2013-2014. Statistics can be misleading and I do think he has made some contribution, but his struggle for prominence surely cannot up his value. He's also suffered some injuries this season, which can be both a valid excuse and a reason to doubt what he would do for United. I'm going to go with my gut on this issue.
Something rubs me wrong about Fabregas and his departure from the challenges at Arsenal to board the Barcelona Express. He looked disillusioned by the lack of grit the Gunners showed during his tenure, but I feel he offered none of his own. I don't begrudge anyone their ambitions, but he opportunistically moved to his boyhood club when the going got rough, and hitched a ride on a team that would have likely won without him. The Red Devils need a strong leader - someone to put a game on his shoulders and will the team to victory. He would surely raise our average skill level, but we have enough passengers right now.
Now, according to reports, he may want to leave Spain for more playing time. Again, no problem with that. He's a professional athlete and that's how he makes a living. But it doesn't mean he's a good fit at Manchester United. There must be better options, and at a much lower cost.
Cesc Fabregas is a high quality footballer and one would have to be mad to think otherwise, but is he the right choice to strengthen the midfield at Old Trafford? Ask yourself another question: Is he the right choice at £43 million? No, thanks. Maybe another club would have him.
